Freeside has an internal DNS server for manging hostnames, This makes FreeIPA management a lot easier as well.

Why the wild card/Why does every subdomain point to 22.214.171.124?
The wildcard is used because it makes the Admins job a lot easier. When setting up web services on a new subdomain you can simply change the server_name in the nginx configuration to tell nginx where to redirect the traffic.
